484
years ago, Ponce De Leon returned to Florida with seven Andalusian
cows. Florida’s terrain provided for the perfect environment
for the cattle to flourish and by the early 1800’s, cattle
were abundant throughout the state. Southwest Florida was a popular
destination in the 1800’s as the cattle shipping trade quickly
grew.
Punta
Rassa, the flattened area in San Carlos Bay pointing to Sanibel,
quickly became a thriving cattle port and cattle barons, including
the likes of Jake Summerlin, were getting very wealthy. Avoiding
the Union blockades, cattlemen shipped 30,000 head of cattle to
Cuba annually and helped to eventually feed the Confederate Army.
In
the late 1800’s, the first Tarpon was caught on a rod and
reel near Punta Rassa and the news quickly spread of the fertile
fishing grounds. Hotelier, George Schultz opened the Tarpon House
at Punta Rassa and Southwest Florida soon garnered the reputation
for exceptional fresh local meats and seafoods…and the tradition
continues today.
Honoring
the area’s history, Rassa Steaks and Seafood is proud to
open Sanibel’s newest steak and seafood house. Executive
Chef Michael Price and his culinary team combine exceptionally
seasoned, well-marbled steaks with a variety of the freshest local
seafood prepared to perfection.
Enjoy!
