Welcome
to a secluded paradise on Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Gentle
waves roll in some of the most beautiful seashells found anywhere.
In fact, ours is one of the most renowned areas in the world for
shelling. A visit to the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, the only
seashell museum in the U.S., features thematic groupings of shells
in ecological habitats from Southwest Florida's barrier islands
to the Everglades.
With
more than half of the island's area preserved as a wildlife sanctuary,
there are plenty of opportunities to explore the islands' natural
beauty. Amidst the 6,000-acre J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife
Refuge, numerous native birds, raccoons, otter and other wildlife
are spotted on canoe trails and a five-mile scenic drive route.
Throughout
the area there are dozens of places to venture the waterways on
canoes, sea kayaks, sailboats or powerboats. For those with their
own boat, there's easy access to the water with many launch ramps
throughout the area. Salt- and freshwater charters and cruises
are also available for anglers and sightseers.
Fine
restaurants, specialty shops and unique galleries and boutiques
are also nestled in the tropical island setting.
